Siargao Weather & Climate
Best Time to Visit Siargao
Perhaps the main reason why one would go to Siargao is the water sports, especially surfing. Siargao is the surfing capital of the Philippines, after all. To maximize the visit, it’s best to know what time of the year to go based on the weather and conditions.
Generally, the peak tourist season for Siargao, based on weather, is between March and October as this is the dry season. Naturally, off peak season would be November to February. But when exactly to go depends on what you intend to do.
For those who plan to go surfing, the best months would be August to November. This is when the swell and wind conditions are at their best, so you’ll find really good waves to catch. If you go in September, you might also catch the Annual Siargao International Surfing Competition. You’ll catch the waves on the east coast (Pacific Ocean side), because the winds will be from the North East. Expect Siargao to be crowded during this time.
Kayaking is best done between March and October, when the winds are not so strong, and there is lots of sun to reveal Siargao’s crystal clear waters. Go all out and explore the place while kayaking, making sure to check out the Daku, Guyam, and Naked Islands, as well as Cloud 9 and the Mangrove Forests. There will be kayak tours available and readily accessible for tourists. Take note however, that while some recommend those months for kayaking, many say that it’s still okay to go kayaking in Siargao at any time of the year.
March to May is the ideal season for fishing, when the big bill fish like the Marlin and Sailfish are most active. There are, however, fish that can be caught all year long, such as the Yellowfin Tuna, the Mackerel, and the Mahi-mahi. You might want to catch the International Game Fishing Tournament that takes place in Siargao in April. A good thing to keep in mind is to check out the fish markets – this will give you a pretty good idea as to what most people have been catching recently.
Kiteboarding and Windsurfing are best done from December until the end of March. You can launch your kite and ride in the warm, shallow clear water lagoon directly in front of Viento Del Mar. Conditions are perfect for beginners. Advanced riders will love the flat water conditions for freestyle riding and the world class waves at the reef.
Lastly, scuba diving is best done between April and October, when the swell is smaller and the waters are clearer, thanks to the sun being out more often. This will allow you to see the most at the 20 famous diving spots in Siargao. There are PADI certified diving instructors available for beginners.
If you follow the advisory above, you’ll at least know what to do when you’re in Siargao depending on the time of the year. Of course, keep in mind that there will always be many other things to enjoy while you’re there regardless of Siargao weather.
